Emily Mae Phuket Island Radio Presenter
What made you want to be a radio presenter?
It all began with my love for the music of course! I began studying music but wanted the experience to go along with it so I found myself at a radio station on the Gold Coast working in administration (because I never thought I would want to be in the limelight) but I fell into the role of Breakfast Show host after some convincing by my boss… and the rest is history!
How long have you been in Phuket?
I’ve only been here since late April but have visited Thailand twice on vacation but I already love living here.
What do you love most about Phuket?
Everything is still new and exciting for me so I feel like a dog with my head out of a car window every time I’m driving around the island and it’s such a good feeling. I love the food too because it’s acceptable for me to have meals involving soy sauce and chilli at any time of the day without judgement.
What.s it like to work at 91.5FM?
It’s a very friendly and encouraging environment. I moved over here alone so it has been really nice to have a supportive team at the station to help me settle in and feel welcome.
What music do you like?
I went through a phase where I only listened to pop-punk/rock (or mo music as my parents would probably have said) but over the past two years, I let dance music into my life and that eventually trickled down to me being able to tolerate and love pop music. I find myself singing along to the Hot AC tracks way too often when I’m alone in the studio.
What do you do in your spare time?
Since being here I’ve spent a lot of time at markets, setting up my apartment and attempting to get a tan (living in the most tropical part of Australia didn’t do it for me).
What advice can you give to someone who might be thinking about coming on holiday to Phuket?
Don’t be afraid to try something different because you will regret it. There is no point in flying thousands of miles to do, eat or experience things that you can find in your home country when there are so many unique memories to create here. And to all my friends and family planning a holiday to Phuket, you can’t stay with me. There are plenty of hotels on the island, haha.
Emily spent 6 months with Phuket Island radio through a very difficult time for Thailand as the 2014 Coup took place. She has now returned to her home in Australia and we take this opportunity to wish her well.
